This is a used OEM-style GM LS 317 cylinder head. The 317 casting is an aluminum cathedral port LS cylinder head commonly found on 6.0L GM LS-based engines, including applications such as LQ4 and LQ9.
317 heads are known for their larger combustion chambers compared to smaller 4.8L and 5.3L LS truck heads such as 706 and 862. While this makes them less popular for some naturally aspirated budget builds, the larger chamber can be useful in the right engine combination.
We like 317 heads for turbo, supercharged and pump gas LS builds where slightly lower compression can be an advantage. They can be a good match for 5.7L or 6.0L LS builds with flat top pistons, especially when the goal is to make reliable power on regular pump fuel without spending big money on aftermarket cylinder heads.
